Road Safety - accompanying children to school
Holding hands remains an important way of keeping younger children safe on journeys to and from school or while out shopping. The Green Cross Code continues to provide key safety messages and is just as relevant today as ever.
Green Cross Code
- Stop behind the kerb.
- Look both ways, starting with the right (as traffic drives on the left in the UK)
- Listen for traffic and emergency vehicles.
- Think about whether it is safe to cross and keep looking and listening while crossing.
Children should be reminded not to cross until the road is clear and to continue looking while crossing. This is especially important as electric cars are very quiet but can still travel at speed.
As children grow older and begin to travel more independently, the Green Cross Code learned at an early age becomes increasingly important.

Protection
Wearing a cycle helmet when cycling or scooting should be encouraged at all ages, as it demonstrates responsible behaviour.
